Welcome to “The English as a Lingua Franca discourse” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. This Section aims at describing the discourse of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and delineating the features which are crucial in establishing effective communication in ELF contexts, most especially between non-native speakers. To this end, it focuses on issues related to variability, pragmatics, pronunciation and misunderstandings in ELF interactions, highlighting how these may facilitate or impede mutual understanding. This Section includes 4 Activities in total.

Welcome to the “Using English” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. This Section refers to the importance of looking at the real world and realizing how English is used, by whom, under what circumstances and with what competences. Emphasis is placed on the parameters that “govern” language communication, especially in view of the current global character of English. This Section also provides an overview of the aims of the sub-Sections of “English as a Lingua Franca” and “Linguistic diversity”, each of which focuses on specific aspects related to using English nowadays. 1.1.2 Key issues in using English as a Lingua Franca

Welcome to the “Key issues in using English as a Lingua Franca” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. In this Section we critically discuss several major issues when attempting to identify the fundamental characteristics of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Firstly, we introduce the concept of identity construction of the user of English and the relationship between identity and ELF. Secondly, we explain the idea of ownership of English and how the concepts of identity and ownership are interconnected. Then, we introduce the debate over Standard vs. Non-standard English. Next, mutual intelligibility and the use of communication strategies in linguaculturally diverse interactions in English are examined. Afterwards, we present key features of multilingual contexts of ELF and finally, the intercultural nature of ELF communicative interactions are analysed. This Section includes 4 Activities in total.

The present introductory Section provides an overview of the Course. It describes the aims, overall layout and content of the Course, as well as the possible ways in which it can be navigated. Special emphasis is placed on the tasks that you, that is, the prospective participant of the Course, are invited to carry out. Going through this Section is highly important in order for you to understand what the Course is about and how you could get the most out of it, regardless of whether you are participating in it on your own, that is, in a self-study mode, or in a group supported by a teacher educator and/or a mentor. This Section also includes a brief Introductory Questionnaire which you are asked to complete before going through the rest of the Sections.
