Welcome to the “Employing Task-based Learning” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. This Section focuses on Task-based Learning (TBL) as one of the language learning approaches most appropriate in an ELF-aware approach where the focus is on authenticity in language exposure. A detailed introduction to what is commonly understood by the notion of “task”, particularly within the CEFR, is accompanied by the description of Task-based language teaching, its main principles and its advantages. A discussion on Task-based learning within an ELF aware approach concludes this Section. This Section includes four Activities in total.

Welcome to the “Large and small cultures in English language teaching” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. This Section discusses the concept of “culture” in English language teaching (ELT), placing emphasis on its relevance to the current role of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). More specifically, it introduces the notion of European Cultural Heritage as a valuable source of inspiration for teachers and learners and it presents two perspectives –the large-culture and the small-culture ones– which ELT activities could illustrate either in a typical EFL approach or in a post-EFL, ELF-aware approach. Various samples of ELT activities are discussed in this respect. This Section includes four Activities in total.

Welcome to “The content of ELF-aware teaching” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. This Section discusses the content of ELF-aware teaching, including the kind and types of input that could be employed in English Language Teaching (ELT) activities which integrate insights gained from English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Special emphasis is placed on the general competences and communicative language competences which ELT aims at developing and on the ways these could be viewed from an ELF-aware perspective. In this regard, this Section highlights the ways in which the content of typical EFL teaching can be enriched to address more effectively the needs of the learners in today’s multilingual and multicultural world. Welcome to the “Methods, approaches and beyond” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. This Section focuses on defining, describing and discussing the function and role of methods in English language teaching (ELT). It clarifies the use of specific terms such as method, approach, procedures, techniques, activities and tasks as commonly used in ELT. These terms are being revisited within an ELF aware perspective whereby teachers are “informed practitioners” capable of choosing and adapting a teaching methodology that meets their learners’ needs and takes into account current changes in the global use of English and challenges of an ELF perspective. You are invited to think about yourself as a prior learner and a teacher, about theory vs. practice implications and about choosing and using methods and approaches within new linguistic landscapes and pedagogical approaches. 2.2.1 Language skills: Oracy and literacy

Welcome to the “Language skills: Oracy and literacy” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. This Section defines the notion of language skills, both in its traditional receptive and productive components of listening, reading, speaking, and writing, and in its CEFR subdivision of communicative activities. It includes a reflective discussion of the notions of spoken and written language as are traditionally presented in coursebooks and classroom practice and in its realizations in real life, which unveils how oracy and literacy are changing in new global societal contexts. Specific attention is paid to how learners of English are increasingly exposed to a variety of Englishes and to ELF. The ELF-aware perspective requires a change in oracy development in terms of aural and spoken comprehension and the introduction of the notion of intelligibility. This Section includes three Activities in total.

Welcome to the “ELF-aware teaching” Section of the ENRICH CPD Course. This Section focuses on defining the concept of “ELF awareness” and, in particular, the concept of “ELF-aware teaching”, as a process whereby insights drawn from English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) are integrated in current ELT practices to the extent that this is appropriate and relevant to the local context. Special emphasis is placed on the three components of the concept of ELF awareness, namely “awareness of language and language use”, “awareness of instructional practice” and “awareness of learning”, and on what each of them involves in practice. Specific examples of the ways in which textbook input and activities can be enriched from an ELF-aware perspective are provided. This Section includes 3 Activities in total.
